整理CD时，竟然发现自己几乎收藏了Depeche Mode的所有专辑，从1981年的首张专辑《Speak & Spell》到2009年的《Sounds of the Universe》，其中还包括六大套35碟的单曲。这些单曲，从封面设计上看，匠心独运，美不胜收，摊摆开来也张张都是撞击眼球的精美艺术品；从内容上看，几乎每张都有少见的不同混音版本，容量不小。我很欣慰。
时间跨度如此之长的乐队，自然也经历不少分合与曲折。争吵、毒品、酒精、抑郁……多少天才乐队伴随着它们成长与毁灭，Depeche Mode也概莫能外。这支“合成器+流行”的英国组合，在英式叛逆中始终保持着德国Kraftwerk的冷峻，正如主唱David Gahan舒缓、淡定的音调，在电子舞步的颠颠摇摇中收放自如地再高低音间游刃有余地滑行。他们的音乐，也因此脱去了流行舞曲的庸俗外衣，穿上了一件扑朔迷离的梦幻长袍。
《violator》据说是Depeche Mode商业上最成功的专辑。但更吸引我注意力的则是它的发行年份：1990年。我向来反对将艺术与政治结合起来的进行过度联想的欣赏方法，但这张取名为“亵渎者”的专辑，在那么一个风云突变的年代，以一朵仿佛被剥去皮肤后的血肉模糊的带刺玫瑰作为封面，不得不让埋设在专制意识形态下的脆弱神经产生了一种奇异的刺痛感。这种痛感，在《Clean》这首收尾之作中感觉得更加明显。
短促有力的贝斯，沉闷厚实的鼓点，低压压的阴郁男声不时出现，怪叫一声“Sometimes”， David Gahan反反复复地唱着Now I`m clean……一种激情过后的两手空空，连泪水都被清洗掉的绝望，白茫茫大地真干净。也许我在一厢情愿地误读这首作品，但歌曲结尾那汽锤般的敲打，除了看到一种充满恶意的变革图景之外，我实在无法在看到什么可以不让人消沉的东西了。“Now that I’m clean，You know what I mean”歌中这样唱着，你懂的。
