Peter Gabriel，这位英国前卫摇滚（Progressive Rock）乐队Genesis（创世纪）的前主唱，以这样让人讶异的开场方式将我们带进了其2002年个人专辑《up》的晦暗世界。1975年，离开Genesis的Peter——很多人认为，他的离开是因为个人音乐理念与乐队的不合。对此我深信不疑，因为当时在队中打鼓后来继任主唱随之又大红大紫的Phil Collins根本听不懂Peter的音乐（！）——个人最璀璨的演艺生涯才正式揭开了序幕。他创立了WOMAD (World of Music Arts and Dance)这个多媒体展演组织，发行专辑、奔波演出、行走世界，把实验音乐、流行音乐、世界音乐、民族音乐得心应手地玩弄于股掌之间。与此同时，Peter还参与了不少电影配乐的创作，最为著名的是英国大导艾伦帕克（Alan Parker）的《Birdy》原声。

“我畏惧在深海之中游弋，因有无形的暗影在身下潜行……”这首格调诡异、唱法多变的《Darkness》营造的是在一种童年恐惧的巨大阴影之下的潜意识世界，心理分析大师佛洛依德的幽灵在跌宕起伏的曲调之间得意地冷笑。专辑封面的设计也是颇具匠心的，如果不细看，很难看到清晰的水滴之后，是一张巨大的、因失焦而模糊的脸——这是否是一种概念化的意指？歌中出现的危机四伏的水面、幽暗林中的神秘小屋，地板上像婴儿般蜷缩的恐怖怪物等梦魇印象，在强烈噪音、低声耳语、温柔钢琴的交替、缠绕之中，像一只沉默的野兽埋伏在你内心的暗处，随时准备出击，撕碎你表面光鲜的肉体。Peter Gabriel展示了他把握音乐细节的天赋和才华，将焦虑、畏惧等存在主义概念不动声色地一一唱出，带来了前所未有的听觉体验和心灵思索。
